The Korean 3-step skincare routine: Prepare, Soothe, Protect

The Korean 3-step skincare routine is prepare, soothe, protect, always in that order, and Dr.G calls it P.S.P, its 3-Step Care for Stronger Skin. Seoul dermatologist Dr. Gun-Young Ahn, founder of the No.1 skincare brand in Korea**, gave each step a single job. Prepare gently clears away dead skin cells, soothe replenishes hydration and strengthens the skin barrier, and protect shields the skin from UV rays. Three core steps done every day beat ten done occasionally, because the routine that works is the one you actually keep.
01.
What the Korean 3-step skincare routine is
The Korean 3-step skincare routine gives skin three jobs in a fixed order. Prepare clears dead skin cells, soothe rebuilds comfort and tolerance, and protect shields the skin from UV, so each step sets up the next and sensitive or blemish-prone skin gets stronger day after day.
The sequence comes straight from what Dr. Ahn saw in his Seoul clinic.
Dead cells that build up block whatever comes next, a weakened barrier reacts to everything, and unprotected skin loses by the afternoon what the first two steps built. Cleansing comes before Prepare, so each step lands on a clean face. The same routine has a Korean name, Gak-Bo-Ja (각·보·자), shorthand for exfoliate, moisturize, sun-protect.
With one product per step, the whole routine fits on a single bathroom shelf.

Why the order of the three steps matters
Each step sets up the next, which is why the order never changes.
Dead cells come off first so that what follows reaches the skin, comfort comes second so the barrier holds water, and protection goes on last in the morning so daily UV cannot undo the work.
- Dead cells sit between your skin and everything you apply after, so prepare comes first.
- Comfortable skin holds water better and reacts less to what follows, so soothe comes second.
- Sunscreen is the outermost layer and works from the top, so protect comes last in the morning.
Three core steps done every day beat ten done occasionally. The routines that change skin are the ones people actually finish. A structured, guided routine takes the guesswork out of choosing products [2], and a consistent regimen produces measurable improvement in dry skin [3].

The Dr.G 3-step routine, product by product
Step 1: Prepare
"Dead skin slows healing. In my clinic, every treatment starts with a peeling," says Dr. Gun-Young Ahn.
Preparing means lifting the dead surface cells that dull the skin and block what follows, and it is the step beginners skip. Dr.G's Brightening Peeling Gel lifts dead cells through cotton cellulose and rolls them into soft beads as you massage, a scrub without scratch.
It is the first non-acidic peeling gel formulated for sensitive skin. Massage it onto dry skin, where it grips dead cells better than on wet, for about a minute, then rinse and go straight to the soothing step.
Clinically proven results: Brightening Peeling Gel
Fewer dead cells left on the surface after one use.
Skin that feels smoother after one use.
Moisture that stays even after rinse-off.

Step 2: Soothe
Redness and stinging get read as fragility, so the instinct is to shelter the skin. Dr.G sees it the other way round, since sensitive skin is not fragile, it is weakened, and a weakened barrier is something you rebuild every day. That is why soothing is the core step of the routine, morning and evening.
R.E.D Blemish Clear Soothing Cream calms visible redness as a translucent cooling gel-cream that breaks into water on contact and settles without residue.
Behind it sits the 10 Cica Complex, ten complementary soothing actives centered on cica, the shorthand for centella asiatica. Press the cream in with your fingertips rather than rubbing, because friction is itself an irritant on reactive skin, under sunscreen in the morning and as the last step at night.

Step 3: Protect
Without sunscreen, daily UV works against the barrier the first two steps rebuild, whatever the season and whatever the weather.
"In clinic, protection is never optional. The best treatments fail without protection," says Dr. Ahn.
Green Mild Up Sun+ SPF50+ PA++++ shields the skin with a fluid 100% mineral formula built on zinc oxide, with Ectoin D. The finish stays soft, with no stickiness. PA++++ is the Korean rating for UVA protection, at its highest grade, and it sits alongside the US Broad Spectrum label.
Apply it every morning as the last step, before makeup, and reapply through the day when you are outdoors.

How beginners start the Korean 3-step routine
Beginners start the Korean 3-step routine by adding one product at a time, testing it on a small area first and keeping the same order every day. A few weeks per product is a fair window before judging what it does for your skin.
- Go slow. One new product at a time, a few weeks each, because a verdict formed after four days measures how a texture feels, not what it does.
- Patch test. Try a small amount of each new product on the inner arm, 24 hours before it goes on your face. It costs one day and saves two weeks of guessing.
- Be consistent. Same three steps, same order, every day, so the routine becomes a habit rather than a project.
